If Money Were My Boyfriend

If Money Were My Boyfriend

If Money were my boyfriend,

I'd be very wishy-washy.

One day I'd need this and that,

the next day change my mind.

My patience would be breakable

(irritable at best),

all the while believing that I'll

never earn his love.

If money were my boyfriend,

it'd be a losing game.

I'd feel anxious of his dismissal.

He wouldn't feel the same.

I try to feel deserving

by making myself a martyr.

The energy I'm giving only

driving him away.

If Money were my boyfriend,

I'd lose my sense of self;

my hobbies, passions, friendships, they

collect dust on a shelf.

My boyfriend would always be around,

but never leave the couch,

for he would lose his passion, too.

He'll say, "I'll figure it out."

If Money were my boyfriend,

I'd eventually burn out.

Life would pass, and there he'd stay,

lifeless but devout.

We might even have children,

and on my deathbed say,

"Let Money earn your love, babies.

I'd rather live that way."
